John B. Buse, MD, Ph.D.

Dr. Buse is a Professor of Medicine at the
University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine in Chapel Hill,
North Carolina where he serves as the Director of the Diabetes
Care Center, Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Executive
Associate Dean for Clinical Research. Dr. Buse has a diabetes practice
located at UNC as well as at the Salem Center in Winston-Salem, North
Carolina. His research interests focus on developing prevention
and treatment strategies for type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and their
complications. He has authored more than 200 publications and is
involved in numerous multicenter clinical trials. Dr. Buse serves
on the Data Safety Monitoring Board or Steering Committee for NIH and
international studies such as NAVIGATOR, ORIGIN, IRIS, TECOS, FREEDOM
and NASH CRN. He has received numerous awards and honors,
including the 2010 Castle Connolly National Physician of the Year
award. Dr. Buse received his medical degree and Ph.D. from Duke
University in Durham, North Carolina before training in internal
medicine and endocrinology at the University of Chicago.

Antonio Ceriello, M.D. |

Dr. Ceriello is Professor at the Institut d'Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), Barcelona, Spain. Professor Ceriello has published widely in the area of diabetes with over 200 original papers and several book chapters. Prof. Ceriello was a consultant of the National Institutes of Health, U.S.A. for the program on research related to cardiovascular disease and type 1 diabetes and a member of the writing committee of the American Hearth Association for the guidelines on “Acute Hyperglycemia and Acute Coronary Syndromes”. He has recently chaired the IDF committee for the development of “Guideline for Management of Postmeal Glucose” and is currently the President of the EASD Study Group on “Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases” and a member of the board of IDF Europe. He also serves as Associate Editor of “Diabetes Care” and “Diabetic Medicine”. Prof. Ceriello is the winner of 2004 Castelli Pedroli Prize of EASD. |

Stephano Del Prato, M.D. |

Dr. Del Prato is
Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the School of Medicine,
University of Pisa and Chief of the Section of Diabetes, University of
Pisa, Italy. Dr. Del Prato's research interests have always been
concerned with diabetes and in particular the physiopathology and
therapy of type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance syndrome. He is a
member of many societies and associations including the European
Association for the Study of Diabetes, the American Diabetes
Association, the Mediterranean Group for the Study of Diabetes, the
International Diabetes Federation. Dr. Del Prato serves on the
editorial boards of various journals. He has published over 300
articles and has been awarded several honors, including the Prize of
the Italian Society of Diabetology for outstanding scientific activity.
He graduated M.D. cum laude from the University of Padova and
undertook post‑graduate specialization in both Endocrinology and
Internal Medicine. |

Philip Home, D.M., D.Phil.

Professor
Home is chair of Diabetes Medicine at Newcastle University and provides
care for people with diabetes and those with disorders of lipid
metabolism at the Newcastle Diabetes Centre and Royal Victoria
Infirmary. Professor Home is consultant to many pharmaceutical
companies and leads numerous research studies. He was a member of the
external panel of the Committee of Safety of Medicines (UK), and is the
Vice-Chairman of the Appraisal Committee of the National Institute for
Clinical Excellence (UK). He has been Vice-President of the
International Diabetes Federation and a member of its Executive Board,
and President of its European Region as well as Chairman the WHO/IDF St
Vincent Executive. Philip Home is involved in editorial boards of many
international diabetes journals. He has published over 370 papers,
books and reviews on aspects of diabetes, ranging from basic studies on
metabolism to aspects of the organization and delivery of diabetes
health-care. He trained in medicine at Oxford University and Guy's
Hospital.

Itamar Raz, M.D.

Dr.
Raz is a professor of Internal Medicine at Hadassah
University Medical
Center and the Head of the Diabetes
Unit at Hadassah University Hospital
where he is involved in basic and clinical research and is currently leading
several large international studies. Prof. Raz is also the head of the Israel
National Council of Diabetes which is responsible for formulating national
policies. In addition, Prof. Raz is President of D-Cure, a non-profit
organization that promotes and funds scientific research in Israel for finding a cure and
better treatments for diabetes. He is the international PI of large outcome
diabetes studies involving the heart and kidney, has over 230 publications to
his credit in professional peer-reviewed journals and serves on international
advisory and editorial boards. Prof. Raz holds an M.D. from Hadassah Medical
School at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem.

Eberhard
Standl, M.D. |

Dr. Standl is Professor
of Medicine, endocrinologist and angiologist at the Munich Diabetes
Research Group/Diabetes Research Institute. He is retired Director of
the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetology and Metabolism at the
Academic Hospital Munich-Schwabing. Professor Standl's principal areas
of research are diabetology, micro- and macrovascular disease,
cardioneuropathy, action and degradation of insulin, and epidemiology
of cardiovascular diabetic complications. He has published some 575
original papers, review articles, textbook chapters and monographs, and
has received various scientific awards. He is a member of several
scientific associations, with strong affiliations to the German
Diabetes Association, the EASD, and the International Diabetes
Federation (IDF). He was President of the German Diabetes Association,
and Vice-President of both EASD and IDF. He is Vice-Chair of the EASD
study group on cardiovascular complications, and former President both
of the German Diabetes Union and of IDF Europe. He graduated from the
Universities of Munich and Frankfurt. |
