In this study, Testosterone was applied as a hydrophilic formulation, in a
liquid or dry state, on a ViaDerm treated skin area of 8 cm2. The area under the
plasma concentration curve (AUC) was compared to an application of a commercial
patch of 15 cm2 (Andropatch) on intact skin. The transdermal delivery rate of
the testosterone through ViaDerm treated skin was three times higher in
comparison with the Andropatch. This resulted in a higher AUC, despite the fact
that the delivery area was much smaller. The advantage of the ViaDerm system is
more pronounced taking into account the formulation used in both cases. The
commercial formulation contains high amounts of alcohol, which often causes skin
irritation. In contrast, the ViaDerm transdermal formulation is completely water
based, with no penetration enhancers, causing no skin irritation.
